The College was started in 1951 under the University of Travancore. I.Com. was the course offered at the intermediate level and B.Com. at the undergraduate level. Subsequently B.Com. evening programme was also offered. M.Com. was offered from 1961. Vocational Diploma Programmes N.D.C., H.D.C. and D.C.P. were offered as evening programmes. In 1997 UGC aided Vocational Three Main Tourism and Travel Management B.Com. was offered. In 1999 the Department was recognized as a research centre. The College Commerce Alumni comprises of all those students from 1951 who did any of those programmes.
