FACULTY OF COMMERCE

Rt. Rev. Dr. Jerome M. Fernandez, the first native Bishop of the Roman Catholic [Latin Rite] Diocese of Quilon founded the College in 1951 as a First Grade College under the then Travancore University. With the reorganization of the University in 1957, it became a constituent of the University of Kerala. Initially the College started functioning with three Under-graduate programmes viz., Commerce, Economics and Zoology. This was followed by the introduction of Under-graduate programmes in Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.
The Faculty of Commerce had a very rapid growth from its very inception. Beside the Under- graduate regular day programme, the Faculty offered National Diploma in Commerce [N.D.C.]  programme of the All India Council for Technical Education as a Part-time Evening Programme. Post Graduate Programme in Commerce [M.Com.] was introduced in 1961. Programmes in Higher Diploma in Co-operation [H.D.C.] and Diploma in Commercial Practice [D.C.P.] were added. In the year 1966, Part-time Evening Under-graduate Programme in Commerce [B.Com.] was introduced. University Grants Commission [UGC] aided Vocational Under-graduate Three Main Programme in Tourism and Travel Management was introduced in 1997. A modern Computer Laboratory was opened in 1998. In 1999, The University of Kerala recognized the Commerce Faculty as a Research Centre. In 2006, UGC aided three Add on Under-graduate programmes were introduced in Banking and Financial Services, Travel and Tourism Management, and e-Commerce. At present the Faculty of Commerce offers Under-graduate Programme (B.Com.), Post–graduate Programme (M.Com.) and Research Programme (Ph.D.). All these Programmes are conducted under the University of Kerala.
The present Patron of the College is Rt. Rev. Dr. Stanley Roman, the Bishop of Kollam and its present Principal is Rev. Sr. Dr. Soosamma Kavumpurath. Dr. P.C. Thomas serves as the Head of the Faculty of Commerce and as the Director of the Research Centre.
The Fatima Mata National College Commerce Alumni comprises of all the students who did different Programmes in the Faculty from the year 1951. The main object of the Alumni is to foster the continued relationship of all the former students with their Alma Mater. It also facilitates the interaction and relationship among the members themselves. The Alumni implements various schemes for the help and encouragement of the existing students of the Faculty of Commerce.
